Adolescent Care

Adolescence is one of the most important, and most complex, stages of your child's development. As teens navigate rapid physical, emotional, and social changes, having a trusted provider in their corner makes all the difference. Our pediatric team supports both teens and their families through every stage of this transition, from the first signs of puberty through young adulthood.

What we provide.

Whole-Person Care for a Whole New Stage

Adolescent care goes beyond physicals. We address the physical, emotional, and social changes that define the teen years, supporting healthy development from the inside out.

A Safe Space for Teens to Be Heard

We give teens private, confidential time with their provider, a safe environment to ask questions, voice concerns, and build trust with their healthcare team. It's how we help teens take ownership of their health.

Partnership with the Whole Family

We keep parents and guardians involved and informed every step of the way. Our goal is to help teens become independent, health-literate adults, while keeping families connected to their care.

What to expect during a visit

Adolescent visits follow the same structure as well-child visits, but with a twist. Part of the visit includes one-on-one time between your teen and their provider, without parents or guardians in the room. This private time helps teens build a trusting relationship with their doctor, ask questions they might feel uncomfortable raising otherwise, and gradually take a more active role in their own healthcare.

Parents are always included in part of the visit, and our team is here to support open communication between teens and their families, not replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is adolescent confidentiality?

As your child grows into adolescence Oregon law grants them certain rights to seek confidential medical care which means some services can be provided without parental consent or notification. These areas typically include sexual and reproductive health, mental health counseling, and substance use treatment. These protections exist to encourage teens to seek the care they need. Our providers are committed to supporting the overall health and well-being of your child and your family and always encourage open communication between teens and their parents. If you have questions about how confidentiality applies to your adolescent's care we welcome you to speak with your child's provider.

  • At what age does my child start having private time with their doctor?

Private one-on-one time with a provider typically begins around age 11–12 and increases as your teen gets older. It's an important part of helping adolescents build a trusting relationship with their healthcare team and take ownership of their health.

  • Does TCC see patients through college age?

Yes, we continue to see patients through age 21. Well-child visits during the teen and young adult years are just as important as early childhood checkups and our team is here for all of it.

  • Do you offer Nexplanon placement for teens?

Yes, Nexplanon placement is available as part of our special services and is particularly relevant for adolescent patients. Talk to your teen's provider to discuss whether it's the right option and to arrange an appointment.

  • Do you offer mental health support for teens?

Yes, our integrated behavioral health team works alongside your teen's primary care provider to address anxiety, depression, ADHD, stress, and other mental health concerns. Support is available in the same practice your family already trusts. Visit our Behavioral Health page to learn more.
